The Perth Mint is the creator of the groundbreaking series and spotlights its focus on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a 12-year calendar of ancient origins, featuring 12 distinct animals celebrated separately for each of those 12 years. According to Chinese folklore, the 12 animals were the only creatures to honor the invitation of Buddha to bid him farewell before he ascended to heaven. Among these twelve animals, we have the monkey, a symbol of intellect, peace, and wisdom. This release of the Gold Lunar Series offers stunning imagery of the monkey along with an effigy of the former Australian monarch.

For the obverse field of the 2004 1 oz Australian Gold Lunar Monkey Coin, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II is featured in a stunning right-profile portrait. This image was sculpted by Ian Rank Broadley, a world-renowned French-American engraver who depicted her as a fearsome, aged monarch. Her legendary, glistening tiara makes an appearance. It was gifted to her by her grandmother, Queen Mary. This image is referred to commonly as the Fourth Portrait because it is the fourth iteration of the queen.

For the reverse field of the 2004 1 oz Australian Gold Lunar Monkey Coin, the image of a monkey is featured. The creature is seen walking slowly on a sturdy branch towards something not depicted on the surface of the coin. Its long tail curves slightly into the air behind it.  The Chinese character for ‘monkey’ is featured beside the monkey along with the inscription, ‘1/4 oz 9999 gold.’
