Austrian Mint Coins & Precious Metals
The Austrian Mint holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operated mint in Europe. Founded in 1194, the mint has one of the most intriguing founding stories of any mint in the world. Now producing circulation coins in the Euro denomination, the mint also produces a range of bullion specimens and has historically struck a variety of different gold circulation coins throughout the nation’s history.
Philharmonic Coins
Arguably the most well-known product of the Austrian Mint is its modern bullion coin, the Austrian Philharmonic. Designed by Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer, the Philharmonic debuted in 1989 with gold bullion coins. The program features 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/25 oz gold coins.
In 2008, a Silver Philharmonic was introduced with only a 1 oz silver option available. In 2016, a Platinum Philharmonic was introduced in 1 oz platinum and was quickly followed by a 1/10 oz platinum coin. The Philharmonics all share the same obverse and reverse designs.
Historic Gold Coins
With its long, rich history, the Austrian Mint has also produced a range of gold coins for circulation, with many of the remaining specimens being the coins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These coins featured varying denominations in the Corona, Ducat, and Florin face values. Austro-Hungarian gold coins featured 90% gold content and were widely accepted throughout the empire and greater Europe.
