Paul Kruger was elected President of the South African Republic (Transvaal) in 1883 and served four terms until 1900, presiding over a period of dramatic transformation following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886. His presidency was marked by tensions between the conservative Boer population and the influx of foreign miners seeking fortune in the gold fields, whom Kruger denied political rights to maintain Boer control. His government’s policies, combined with British imperial ambitions in the region, escalated tensions that ultimately led to the Second Boer War in 1899.
On the obverse of the 2026 South African Gold Krugerrand, you’ll find the portrait of Paul Kruger, first used in the 1890s for the South African Gold Pound and enduring as the signature image of the Krugerrand.
The reverse of 2026 1/2 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins depicts the Springbok antelope, a symbol revived for the Gold Krugerrand in 1967 that originally appeared on earlier South African coinage in the 1930s and 1940s and continues to represent national identity.
