First issued in 2006, the American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin was the first 24–karat gold proof coin produced by the United States Mint. It serves as the collector-focused version of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin. These proof coins are created using a specialized minting process in which prepared blanks are handled individually and struck multiple times. This approach produces detailed, softly frosted design elements that contrast with a reflective background, resulting in a sharp and well-defined visual presentation. The box is housed within an outer shipper and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The 2026 Proof Gold Buffalo includes dual 1776 and 2026 date marks on the obverse, as well as the US Mint’s America 250 Liberty Bell emblem celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial.

In addition to the America 250 celebration at the US Mint in 2026, several important coin programs mark notable anniversaries. While the American Eagle Series celebrates its 40th anniversary for gold and silver issues in 2026, the Gold Buffalo Series marks its 20th anniversary.

The obverse of the 2026-W Proof American Gold Buffalo features a right-profile portrait of an Indigenous figure. This design was originally created by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Rather than representing a single individual, Fraser combined the features of three Indigenous individuals from the early 20th century to develop this portrait.

On the reverse of the 2026-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coin, the design highlights the American bison. Also created by Fraser, the image shows the animal in left-profile relief. The depiction is based on Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s, and presents the animal with its head lowered as it grazes on a small mound of ground.
