Silver Elephants were introduced by the Bavarian State Mint in 2004 as the series shifted from its title as the Zambia Silver Elephant (1999-2003). From 2004 to 2006, these coins had a face value of 1,000 Shillings, and feature 100 Shillings face values as of 2007. In 2016, the silver purity increased to .9999 pure content from .999 pure silver content.
On the obverse side of all 1 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coins is the Somali coat of arms. The national coat of arms for Somalia features a crowned shield with a single star at the center of a field with horizontal lines. The shield is supported on either side by leopards with fern leaves and spears below.
The reverse face of Somalia Silver Elephant Coins includes the African bush elephant. The largest living land mammal, the African bush elephant appears in a new design relief on the reverse side of these coins each year. The designs on this face never repeat. The bush elephant is one of three living species of elephants alongside the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant.
