The most notorious era of rum running in the Caribbean came during American Prohibition (1920-1933), when the smuggling of alcohol into the United States became an immensely profitable enterprise. Caribbean islands, particularly the Bahamas, Cuba, and Jamaica, transformed into staging grounds for operations that transported millions of gallons of rum to thirsty American consumers.

The obverse of the 2024 EC8 Colorized Silver Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken Coin displays the official seal of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. Established in 1983, the ECCB is responsible for maintaining the stability of the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which has been pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 to US$1 since 1976.

By the golden age of piracy in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Caribbean Kraken had evolved to become a distinct entity in maritime folklore, often described as having characteristics that differed from its European counterpart. Pirates and privateers would use tales of the Caribbean Kraken to deter pursuit or to explain disappearances of rival ships.
