The habitat range of African bush elephants is remarkably diverse and expansive, stretching across sub-Saharan Africa from the Sahel region to South Africa. These adaptable creatures can thrive in multiple ecosystems, from semi-desert environments in Namibia to dense rainforests in Central Africa, and from coastal areas to mountainous regions up to 8,000 feet in elevation.

These particular coins in the 2025 release are gilded specimens. A layer of 24-karat gold has been selectively applied to the reverse field and covers the entire frame of the bush elephant to create contrast between the animal and its surrounding design elements.

On the obverse of the 2025 Somalia Silver Elephant Coins, the design element presents the national coat of arms of Somalia, as created by the Bavarian State Mint. This emblem includes a central shield adorned with horizontal lines and a star. Flanking the shield are leopards, while the design’s border is accented with a beaded pattern.

On the reverse side, the 2025 1 oz Silver Elephant Coin depicts a solitary elephant walking across the African savanna. As the elephant moves toward the foreground, you can spot the lush vegetation and shrubs, with distant mountains visible on the horizon. African bush elephants, despite being highly social animals, can exhibit solitary behavior, particularly among adult males known as bulls. After reaching sexual maturity around age 12-15, male elephants typically leave their maternal herds and often spend large portions of their lives alone or in loose, temporary associations with other bulls.
