The Wampanoag are an Indigenous people whose ancestral homeland spans present-day southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island, including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Their name translates to “People of the First Light” or “People of the Dawn,” reflecting their eastern coastal location, where they would witness the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean.

The three-day event was likely more of a political alliance ceremony than a celebration of friendship, with the Wampanoag providing most of the food, including deer, and vastly outnumbering the roughly 50 surviving colonists.
