On the obverse of 2026 American Gold Buffalo Coins is a depiction of an indigenous figure. This right-profile relief captures an indigenous figure with braided hair and a feather woven in. The design was originally created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel and is widely considered one of the earliest depictions of an indigenous figure on American currency.

The reverse of 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins features an American bison. Also designed by Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, this image shows a mighty bison standing on a small patch of dirt. Inspiration for this image came from Black Diamond, a resident bison living at New York’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century.
