Koala habitats center around eucalyptus forests and woodlands, as these marsupials depend almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves for nutrition. They inhabit open forests, woodland areas, and coastal regions from Queensland through New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. However, habitat fragmentation, urbanization, and climate change have severely impacted koala populations, with suitable habitat becoming increasingly scattered and isolated.

The coin arrives in a Koala-themed shipper with an included Certificate of Authenticity. The high-relief strike creates a deeper background field to heighten the details of the design elements. There are three recognized subspecies across Australia, with those in Northern Queensland typically smaller and grayer, while koalas in Victoria are larger and have darker fur. Populations found in New South Wales fall in between the other two subspecies in appearance.
