Humanity’s history with the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the most famous of all predators from age of the dinosaurs, began in the late 19th century as small armies of fossil hunters went forth into the American wilderness in the service of rival paleontologists Edward Cope and Othniel Marsh. In 1892, during what would later be called the Bone Wars, Cope discovered two partial vertebrae from what he guessed was a new kind of dinosaur which he called “Mandospondylas Gigas.” It would be a century before it was discovered that this was the same dinosaur as Tyrannosaurus Rex, first named as such with the discovery of impressive skeletons by Barnum Brown a decade later in Montana. The “T-Rex” has been a staple of books, television, and films ever since, with its most iconic screen appearance being in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jurassic Park in 1993.
