Taekwondo is a martial art that was formed during the 1940s and 1950s following Japanese occupation of Korea. As martial arts schools known as “kwans” were established in Seoul, General Choi Hong Hi began developing a new form of combat inspired by karate. He called it Tae Kwon Do, which roughly translates to “the art of the kick and the punch.” This new form of martial art quickly rose in popularity over the following decades before making its Olympics debut at the 2000 XXVII Summer Games in Sydney.
