Originally named La Gallega after her Galician origins, the carrack-style ship measured approximately 62 feet in length and displaced around 100 tons. Columbus never particularly favored the vessel, preferring the smaller, more maneuverable Niña, and he commandeered the Santa Maria only because her owner, Juan de la Cosa, sailed aboard as master. The ship carried a crew of about 40 men on the momentous journey that would forever alter world history.
