Description
2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coin
The Santa Maria served as Christopher Columbus’s flagship during his historic 1492 voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, though she was actually the largest and slowest of his three-vessel fleet. The Santa Maria is the first ship to feature in a new series known as Legends of the Seas. As the name suggests, this collection will focus on famous ships from maritime history. Today, 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins are available.
Coin Highlights:
- Comes with a presentation window box!
- 1st coin in the Legends of the Seas Series!
- Proof specimen with selective colorization!
- Limited mintage of only 999 coins!
- Contains 1 troy oz of .9999 pure silver.
- The face value of $5 (CID) is backed by the Cook Islands’ government.
- On the obverse is King Charles III.
- The reverse features a portrait of Columbus alongside the Santa Maria.
Originally named La Gallega after her Galician origins, the carrack-style ship measured approximately 62 feet in length and displaced around 100 tons. Columbus never particularly favored the vessel, preferring the smaller, more maneuverable Niña, and he commandeered the Santa Maria only because her owner, Juan de la Cosa, sailed aboard as master. The ship carried a crew of about 40 men on the momentous journey that would forever alter world history.
All 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins are available here in presentation window boxes. The coins have proof visuals throughout, delivering frosted devices and mirrored fields. The crosses on the sails of the Santa Maria on the reverse have been colorized with red to create even greater visual contrast.
On the obverse of 2026 Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins, you will find a depiction of King Charles III. His Majesty is shown here in left-profile relief without a crown on his head. One of several first-generation portraits of Charles III, this design was created by Dan Thorne.
The reverse of 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins comes with a depiction of Christopher Columbus alongside the Santa Maria at full sail on the high seas. The Santa Maria’s voyage ended tragically on Christmas Eve 1492, when she ran aground on a coral reef off the coast of present-day Haiti. Unable to save the ship, Columbus ordered her timbers salvaged to construct La Navidad, the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
