The Czech Lion Series is a product of the Czech Mint and features new reverse designs each year, with face values in New Zealand dollars backed by the government of Niue.
The double-tailed Czech lion first appeared in the coat of arms during the reign of Přemyslid dynasty kings in the 12th and 13th centuries, becoming the official symbol of Bohemia. The distinctive two tails, which differentiate it from other European heraldic lions, may have originated from artistic convention or as a way to distinguish the Bohemian arms from similar designs.
The obverse of 2023 Niue Czech Lion Gold Coins features the Public Seal of Niue in the upper portion of the design field. The lower portion includes a stylized flaming eagle, representative of the lands of Moravia and Silesia, which formed two of the three major portions of the historical Czech lands.
On the reverse of 2023 1/2 Gram Czech Lion Gold Coins, you will find the mighty lion in front-facing relief set above the upper portion of the Crown of St. Wenceslas. The adoption of the lion as a heraldic symbol reflected European aristocratic traditions and the desire to project power and legitimacy through association with the “king of beasts.” This majestic creature became deeply embedded in Czech national identity through centuries of use in coats of arms, flags, and monuments.
