Introduced in 1987, the British Gold Britannia is a long-running bullion series from The Royal Mint. When the series was introduced, it offered the newest effigy of Britannia to feature on British coinage. Britannia has long been used as an allegorical figure to represent the British Isles and the people of Britain. Philip Nathan’s modern image of Britannia has been a stalwart on the series since 1987, eventually featuring on the silver and platinum bullion coins as well.
The design of Gold Britannias
Since 1987, the reverse design of Gold Britannias has remained the same. Philip Nathan’s left-profile bust of Britannia’s full-length figure is used on all coins in the series. This depiction shows Britannia with a Corinthian helmet, a trident in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left as it rests on a shield with the Union Jack.
The obverse of Gold Britannias has changed over time, with British monarchs always featured on this side. From 1987 until early 2023, only Queen Elizabeth II had featured on the obverse of the coins. In mid-2023, His Majesty King Charles III debuted on the obverse. Monarch portraits used in this series include:
- 1987-1997: Raphael Maklouf’s third-generation portrait of Elizabeth II
- 1998-2015: Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth-generation bust of Elizabeth II
- 2016-2023: Jody Clark’s fifth-generation, and final, portrait of Elizabeth II
- 2023-present: Martin Jenning’s first-generation effigy of King Charles III
